Former Senator Jon Kyl to replace McCain

Today, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey chose former Senator and fellow Republican Jon Kyl to fill Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) seat following McCain’s recent passing. Kyl stated that he would serve for the remainder of the 115th Congress, but would not commit to serving through 2019 and 2020. Kyl represented Arizona in the House of Representatives from 1987 to 1995, and then in the Senate from 1995-2013 after he decided to not seek reelection in 2012. During his time in the Senate, he rose through the ranks of leadership, eventually serving as the Republican Minority Whip starting in 2007. Kyl stated that he would not seek election in the 2020 special election to fill the seat permanently.
