House passes bill naming postal facilities, establishing new ZIP Codes

The House of Representatives recently passed H.R. 6303, naming several USPS facilities and establishing new ZIP Codes. The bill was introduced by Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which has jurisdiction over USPS.

Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) recently arranged for Chaffetz to meet with Zeldin's constituents in the Southampton hamlets of Flanders, Northampton and Riverside, communities that share one ZIP Code covering a number of identical or similar street names. This situation caused delivery headaches for local letter carriers.

“For many years, residents, local elected officials, and community organizations have been aware of this issue and the problems it brings,” Zeldin said. “This has been a priority for them for many years, and it is an honor to be leading this effort in the House. We must advocate for the Senate to take immediate action on this bill in the remainder of this Congress, so that we can get this bill signed into law before the end of the year.”

Besides the Southampton communities, the bill proposes new ZIP Codes for Miami Lakes, FL; Storey County, NV; Ocoee, FL; and Glendale, NY. It now heads to the Senate for consideration.
