POSTAL FACTS: Aug. 19, 2015 (updated)

NALC President Fredric Rolando had a letter to the editor in the Aug. 17 New York Daily News. The letter responded to a news article the Daily News ran on Aug. 11, a truncated version of the AP story on the USPS quarterly report that simply reported the overall losses and then had Rolando—the only person quoted—lauding the figures. In his letter, Rolando explained USPS’ finances in more detail.

Rolando was quoted in an Aug. 14 piece on the Postal Service and possible service cuts. The president’s comments about the actual finances provide good information for a largely conservative audience, informing a story that noted the Postal Service is operationally profitable:

Recent losses stem primarily from a requirement that USPS pre-fund decades of retiree health benefits. Without that liability on the books, USPS would have reported net profits five of the past eight quarters.

National Association of Letter Carriers, the largest postal union, sees USPS’s growing revenues as proof further cuts and consolidations are unnecessary.

Adding that “2015 is turning into one of the USPS’s most impressive annual performances since the Great Recession,” Rolando said USPS has been recording annual operating profits since 2013.

USPS ramps up same-day delivery to compete with UPS, FedEx, Amazon (“Today,” NBC)
