The Case Against S. 1789

What can senators do to repair the bill

Senators should contact Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and urge him to appoint conferees who will fix the fatal flaws in S. 1789 if the House passes a postal reform bill, and oppose any bill that resembles H.R. 2309 during the conference.

Senators should press the Obama administration to play an active role in any conference committee and should reject any compromise that does not address the flaws outlined on the previous pages.

Senators should vote “no” on any conference report that embraces the “shrink to survive” business plan of S. 1789 and fails to provide a path to viability.

Senators and the White House should embrace a strategic commission with stakeholder participation that pursues the kind of comprehensive reform outlined by OMB Deputy Director Rob Nabors in a letter to House leaders in October 2011. Congress must reach a consensus on a new business model before it legislates in this area.
