Saturday mail, NALC Food Drive and more. The editorial pages in Sunday’s Los Angeles Times (the fourth largest newspaper in the country) had a powerful one-two-three punch of letters from readers on the value of Saturday mail. NALC’s National Food Drive received a couple of paragraphs of coverage in an April 15 USA Today. Ohio State Association President John Dyce had a guest column printed in the Sunday, April 14 edition of the Steubenville Herald-Star.
NALC prominent in news media coverage of Saturday mail developments. The NALC was widely quoted in news media coverage of USPS’s announcement that it would not try to override Congress by unilaterally ending six-day delivery. NALC President Rolando was quoted in an April 10 Bloomberg story about the announcement, as well as in a similar story in the Associated Press. Royal Oak, MI Branch 3126 Secretary John Serwach discussed the Postal Service’s financial situation on WDFN-AM on April 10.
‘6 days yes, 5 days no.’ Coverage of the March 25 “USA for 6-Day” rallies dominated the front pages of some newspapers in diverse places. Eugene, OR Branch 916 President Tom Gates made a compelling argument for preservation of the Postal Service in a March 5 guest commentary in the Eugene Register-Guard. In a March 6 letter in the Lake County Examiner, Gates asked readers to contact Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) and ask him to sign on to pro-postal legislation before the House.
USPS must continue Saturday delivery, says GAO. On March 22, the Examiner published a good news story about Saturday mail delivery, using a quote from NALC President Fredric Rolando. On March 23, Region 15 National Business Agent Larry Cirelli was a guest on "The Feder Files," carried on Sirius/XM's "Left" Channel 127. Janesville, WI Branch 572 President Jeffrey Wagner was a guest on WCLO-AM's "Your Talk Show" on March 21. On March 24, postal expert John Nichols wrote another thoughtul article about the Postal Service for Madison, WI's The Cap Times.
Reactions abound to six-day mail developments. On March 22, NALC President Fredric Rolando was a guest on the Ed Schultz radio show. Passage of a continuing resolution retaining the six-day mail mandate, and of GAO ruling that stated USPS must observe the law, was covered by CNNMoney, the Associated Press, Reuters and Bloomberg (among many others). Lawrence, KS Branch 104 President Andy Tuttle’s letter to the editor of Lawrence Journal-World was published March 21. Ed Wytkind, president of the the AFL-CIO’s Transportation Trades Department, wrote a blog post supporting the March 24 national “USA for 6-Day” rallies.
The big reason for Postal Service woes. NALC President Fredric Rolando’s op-ed in The Providence Journal ran March 19. Region 3 RAA Tony Hutson was quoted in Springfield, IL’s State Journal-Register on March 19. NBC News ran a story about the postmaster general’s plan to go ahead and cut Saturday mail delivery. TV stations in Burlington, VT, covered a letter carrier rally in support of six-day mail. Indiana State Association of Letter Carriers President John Triplett and Indianapolis Branch 39 President Paul Toms both were quoted prominently in an Indianapolis Star column. Idaho State Association of Letter Carriers John Paige’s letter to the editor of the Idaho Press-Tribune was published on Feb. 21. Cedar Rapids, IA Branch 373 letter carrier Andrea House wrote a letter to the editor of The Daily Iowan, the University of Iowa’s daily newspaper.
How letter carriers might save your grandma. Letter carriers saving lives was the focus of an article in the April Washington Monthly magazine. Three popular myths about the Postal Service got “busted” by the The Motley Fool. Palm Beach, FL Branch 1690 President Rick Abbarno’s letter to the editor of The Palm Beach Post ran March 2. Long Island City, NY Branch 357 President Dave Van Aken’s letter to the editor of The Queens Courier was published Feb. 22.
Rochester carrier named a ‘Harvey Hero.’ On Steve Harvey's TV talk show, Rochester, NY Branch 210 letter carrier Barbara Langdon described how she rescued a youngster and an adult from a house fire on her route. Also, read letters in Dubuque, IA’s Telegraph Herald, The Buffalo News, and Albany, NY’s Times Union.

Recent, good media coverage reflects letter carriers’ work in spreading our message. There was a flurry of good news coverage of the Postal Service, and it reflects just how well our message is getting out. A New York Times story covers a carrier’s special connection with his customers. A story in The Hill rightly attributes most of the red ink to the pre-funding mandate.” An op-ed piece in the Drexel University student newspaper lambastes pre-funding. An op-ed piece in Wasilla, AK's Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman criticizes pre-funding and calls for congressional action. A Washington Post story features efforts by Hallmark to fight postal cuts. Suburban Philadelphia's Bucks County Courier Times ran a story on Feb. 4 calling the financial problems at the USPS “a scam” created by Congress.
Different hats. Long Island Merged Branch 6000 letter carrier Lorenzo Hudson is featured in a new Postal Service TV commercial. Columbus' ABC Channel 6 profiled Athens, OH Branch 997 letter carrier Charlie Rose. New York City's The Chief-Leader published an extensive, colorful obituary of NALC President Emeritus Vincent R. Sombrotto.

Do We Really Want to Live Without the Post Office? An Esquire article quoted NALC staffers and consultant Ron Bloom. ABC World News spoke with Syracuse carrier about coping with the cold. A Wausau, WI carrier was the focus of a WSAW-TV story about braving the cold. A Burlington, NC carrier's op-ed ran in Burlington's Times-News. A Reuters story featured a Chicago carrier. A Salisbury, MD Daily Times story quoted an Ocean City carrier. A concerned letter writer to The Bellingham [WA] Herald pointed out how pre-funding threatens the Postal Service.

If Congress addresses pre-funding, USPS could adapt. NALC President Fredric Rolando’s letter to the editor of the New York Post was published Dec. 19. On Dec. 14, Madison, WI Branch 507 President Bob Kasper was a guest on WXXM-FM's "The People's Mic" program.
USPS’ issues affect West Virginia. NALC President Fredric Rolando’s op-ed was published in the Dec. 6 Charleston Daily Mail. His op-ed in New Hampshire's Union Leader was published Dec. 4. Madison, WI's The Cap Times published an editorial on how Congress can undo the damage it's done to the USPS. On Dec. 5, Chicago Branch 11 member Vince Atlas was a guest on WBEZ-FM's "Morning Shift" program. Rep. Bill Owens (D-NY 23rd) wrote a solid, fact-filled letter to the editor of the Glens Falls Post-Star.
Eliminate Postal Service pre-funding, not service. President Rolando wrote a powerful op-ed piece published in The Examiner in Washington, DC, on Nov. 28. San Diego Branch 70 President George Elias' letter to the editor of Federal Times was published in the paper's Nov. 26 edition.
Letters in New York, Iowa & Missouri. Letters by carriers appeared in The Buffalo (NY) News, the Quad-City Times of Davenport, IA, and the Southeast Missourian of Cape Girardeau, MO.
NALC, Rolando provide perspective in Postal Service financial report coverage. Much of the reporting on the Postal Service's FY2012 financial statement included the NALC's perspective, with quotes from President Fredric Rolando. Beyond that, some of the articles provided context that helps readers understand the situation.
Hurricane Sandy proves the need for Big Government. News media coverage of Hurricane Sandy’s assault on the East Coast often included a mention or two about who was still out doing their jobs despite the storm—including, in many cases, letter carriers. Also, on Oct. 31, University of Oregon doctoral student Shelley Jensen wrote a commentary piece for The Register-Guard that notes how pre-funding is the “real culprit” behind the Postal Service’s financial problems.
Congress needs to fix the problem it has worsened. On Oct. 29, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette published an editorial that called on Congress to preserve the Postal Service—and to begin by repealing the pre-funding mandate.
Unwise to drive away the U.S. Postal Service. On Oct. 25, The News Journal in Wilmington, DE published a letter to the editor written by Wilmington Branch 191 President Bob Wilkerson. On Oct. 26, the Hunterdon County [NJ] Democrat published an editorial supportive of preserving the USPS.
U.S. Postal Service a value to country. On Sunday, Oct. 14, The Free Press in Kinston, NC, published NALC President Fredric Rolando's letter to the editor. Idaho State Association of Letter Carriers President John Paige’s letter to the editor of the Idaho Statesman was published on Oct. 9.
The wrong approach to saving the Postal Service. In the Oct. 10 New York Times, President Rolando responds to both an Oct. 2 news story and a Sept. 28 editorial. Also on Oct. 10, in a Detroit Free Press opinion piece, Michigan State Sen. Bert Johnson calls on Congress to protect the Postal Service.
Congressional politics to blame for Postal Service’s red ink. On Oct. 1, The Dallas Morning News printed an op-ed by NALC President Fredric Rolando. Rolando's letter to the editor of The Register Citizen was published Oct. 3. Naples, FL Branch 4716 letter carriers were featured in a Sept. 28 story in the Fort Myers News-Press. Salt Lake City Br. 111 activist Chad Mortensen recently was a guest on Family Radio's "On The Record" program.
The Mailman: Not Your Average Superhero. On Sept. 21, ABC World News Tonight named letter carriers “persons of the week” in a segment that focused on this year’s NALC Heroes of the Year. Sept. 27 and 28, President Rolando was quoted prominently in stories about the Postal Service's so-called "default" carried by the Associated Press, Reuters, The Huffington Post, The Washington Post and CNN. On Sept. 25, three members of Red Wing, MN Branch 401 had their letter to the editor printed The Republican Eagle. On Sept. 20, Chattanooga, TN Branch 62 member Rufus Faircloth was the subject of a positive article in the Chattanooga Times Free Press.
Tisdale subject of radio interview. On Sept. 13, NALC Region 3 National Business Agent Neal Tisdale discussed the Postal Service's financial situation with Charles Showalter, host of the Working Family Radio Network program "The Union Edge." The same day, Alton, IL Branch 309 President Joe Mercurio's letter to the editor explained to readers of The Telegraph the real reasons behind the Postal Service's financial problems.
Post office troubles not related to mail. NALC President Fredric Rolando’s op-ed for the Eugene, OR, Register-Guard—the state’s second-largest newspaper—was published on Tuesday, Sept. 11.
Postal workers raise money to help children with muscular dystrophy. Letter carriers from Lake Charles, LA Br. 914 received some great coverage from KPLC Channel 7 over the Labor Day holiday weekend for collecting money outside a local shopping center for the NALC's Fill the Satchel for MDA program. Also, Wisconsin State Association President Scott Van Derven's letter to the editor of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel was published on Sunday, Sept. 2.
What's really behind the Postal Service crisis. NALC President Fredric Rolando had a strong op-ed piece in the Arizona Republic on Sunday, Sept. 2. The same day, an article in the Kansas City Star about worker loyalty, timed to coincide with Labor Day, put a spotlight on Branch 30's Bob Drayer.
Mandates given USPS unrealistic. On Aug. 31, President Rolando's letter to the editor ran in The Columbian [WA], explaining that the congressional mandate to pre-fund future retiree health benefits accounts for most of USPS' red ink. Rolando's letter was written in response to an Aug. 24 editorial.
10 Things the Postal Service Won’t Tell You. NALC President Fredric Rolando was quoted several times in an article about the Postal Service that was published Aug. 27 in The Wall Street Journal’s “Smart Money” section.
Rolando tells Congress to start over, get rid of unfair pre-funding mandate. President Rolando released on Aug. 20 a news feed for hundreds of radio stations around the country, reminding members of Congress that when they return to Washington from the summer recess, they need to undo the financial damage they've done to the U.S. Postal Service. On Aug. 14, Region 13 NBA Tim Dowdy was the subject of a lengthy interview on the radio show "The Union Edge."
The Postal Service is struggling, but not because of the mail. On Aug. 10, NALC President Rolando was quoted extensively in news stories on the Postal Service's quarterly financial report. On Aug. 9, NALC Executive Vice President Timothy O'Malley was interviewed on Washington's Federal News Radio. On August 8, Racine, WI's The Journal Times ran a story about Carrier Alert. On August 5, writer David Morris penned a piece for The Huffington Post.
Letter carriers on the radio. On August 6, NALC President Fredric Rolando was a guest, alongside Rep. Dennis Ross (R-FL), on today's "Laura Ingraham Show." That afternoon, he was on "StandUp!" on Sirius/XM "POTUS" Channel 124. On August 7, NALC Region 11 NBA Dan Toth was a guest on the WERE/America's Work Force Radio in Cleveland. On August 2, Region 15 NBA Larry Cirelli was a guest on the WWRL (New York) Morning Show.
Postal service financial situation. On Aug. 1, NALC Assistant Secretary-Treasurer Nicole Rhine was interviewed on CNN's "The Situation Room" for a piece about the Postal Service. Also on Aug. 1, NALC Executive Vice President Timothy O'Malley was on the country's sixth largest syndicated radio talk show, "The Jerry Doyle Show"—with an estimated audience of 4 million listeners on hundreds of stations nationwide.
The future of the U.S. Postal Service. On Aug. 1, NALC President Fredric Rolando reached a couple of million radio listeners as a guest for an hour-long discussion about the Postal Service on NPR's "Diane Rehm Show." Also on Aug. 1, Ron Nixon of The New York Times wrote a story about the so-called "default." The article included some good points and quoted NALC President Fredric Rolando.
It’s D-Day for the Post Office. New York Times op-ed columnist Joe Nocera wrote on July 31 about the role the congressional pre-funding mandate plays in causing the Postal Service's red ink. NALC President Fredric Rolando was quoted about the so-called "default" in a July 31 Associated Press story that was carried by numerous news outlets. On July 30, NALC Chief of Staff Jim Sauber was interviewed for, and quoted briefly by, American Public Media's "Marketplace" program for a story about the "default."
Mail carriers call for financial fix. The Minneapolis Star Tribune covered the NALC's 68th Biennial Convention and wrote up a story about it, and the Postal Service's financial problems, in its July 27 edition.

Don’t degrade postal services. NALC President Fredric Rolando wrote an op-ed piece for USA Today that was published on Tuesday, July 17.
Mail Carriers Being Trained To Respond To Bio-Terror Attack. ABC affiliate KGTV in San Diego interviewed Branch 70 President Ricardo Guzman for a July 13 story about the city's participation in the Cities’ Readiness Initiative. Also, The Denver Post printed on July 12 a letter to the editor from Branch 47’s Cindy Kirby.
Letter: Congress Caused USPS Woes. NALC President Fredric Rolando's July 3 letter to the editor of Lakeland, FL's The Ledger provided readers some additional context regarding the Postal Service's financial situation South Florida's Sun Sentinel quotes Region 9 RAA Kenneth Gibbs in a story about proposed mail service cuts. A July 11 story in The Washington Post discussed letter carriers' role under the Cities' Readiness Initiative in responding to possible bioterror attacks, while a letter writer in July 5's Post had some praise for letter carriers.

President Rolando's June 25 letter to the editor of Federal Times explained how the paper's earlier news story misled readers on a couple of critical points.

Union proposes commission to help USPS ‘work smarter.’ On June 13, President Rolando told Government Executive that a comprehensive bill to reform the Postal Service should include a mandate to establish a business commission with representatives from the agency’s many stakeholders. On June 18, the NALC sent out to 690 radio stations around the country a news feed recorded by Pam Donato that discusses the Carrier Alert program.

Editorial commentary overlooked what's causing USPS's financial woes. NALC President Fredric V. Rolando’s letter to the editor of Barron's was published June 9, and his letter to the editor of Politico was published on June 8.
The continued fight to save the US Postal Service. Region 12 NBA William Lucini appeared on The Rick Smith Show on May 29. On May 30, The Philadelphia Inquirer ran a story on about the Cities' Readiness Initiative, and The Vernal Express ran a commentary piece from Julie Todich, the vice president of the Utah State Association.

Mandate is the source of red ink. NALC President Fredric Rolando’s letter to the editor of the Idaho Statesman appeared in the paper's May 12 edition.

Congress fails to deliver. Richard Wueste, CEO of Colorado Consulting Associates, a management consulting group based in Alamosa, CO, wrote a pro-postal column for the May 6 issue of The Pueblo Chieftain.

A Band-Aid instead of a more serious reform. NALC Chief of Staff Jim Sauber was interviewed April 27 on the Sirius/XM “POTUS” channel program “Stand Up!” hosted by Pete Dominick. The program airs weekday afternoons from 3 to 6 ET on Sirius/XM Channel 124.

Killing the Messenger: The Downsizing and Death of the Postal Service. Dean Baker, author and co-director of The Center for Economic and Policy Research, blogged about the Postal Service and postal reform in The Huffington Post on April 23. Casper, WY Br. 1681 President Rene Eberhardt's letter to the editor appeared in the April 15 edition of the Casper Journal.

The Senate Can and Should Save the Postal Service. "The United States Postal Service is not broke," wrote The Nation's John Nichols in a blog post dated April 18. April 17's edition of MSNBC's "The Ed Show" featured more coverage of Tuesday's Senate debates. NALC Region 14 National Business Agent John Casciano spoke about the Postal Service's financial situation in the April 18 Boston Globe. An article in the April 16 edition of Washington Square News, the student newspaper for New York University, profiles the professor behind the "Save The Post Office" blog and quotes President Rolando.

Save our Postal Service. Chicago Branch 11 President Mack Julion's letter to the editor of the Chicago Sun-Times was published April 10. April 11's "Marketplace" program on American Public Media featured an interview with NALC Chief of Staff Jim Sauber. Kearney, NE Branch 312 activist Ken Nickerson's letter to the editor of the Kearney Hub also was published April 10. And David Morris, vice president of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, penned a pro-USPS April 8 op-ed piece for the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Congress handcuffs Postal Service. NALC President Fredric Rolando’s op-ed, in response to a March 28 editorial in The Charleston (WV) Gazette, was published April 5. NALC Chief of Staff Jim Sauber discussed the pre-funding mandate in a post for the USPS Office of the Inspector General’s “Pushing the Envelope” blog. On April 4, MSNBC’s Ed Schultz discussed postal reform with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), the author of S. 1853.

Senate defers work on Post Office overhaul. On March 28, The New York Times covered the Senate's failure on Tuesday to gain enough votes to proceed to debate on S. 1789 and quoted NALC President Fredric Rolando. Rolando also was a guest on Thom Hartmann's "The Big Picture" television program on March 26.

Union calls on senators to oppose postal reform bill. In a March 27 story, The Hill quotes NALC President Fredric Rolando. Rolando also was interviewed live on Federal News Radio. An op-ed piece by the president was printed in the Duluth (MN) News Tribune. And the residents of Nalcrest—the union's Florida retirement village—were featured in a front-page story (plus website video) in The Wall Street Journal.
Louisville postal workers part of test to deliver emergency medications door-to-door. Louisville letter carriers have volunteered for a pilot program to deliver supplies of emergency medicines to residents within 48 hours of a biological attack. In a newsfeed March 26 to radio stations around the country, President Rolando spoke about carrier participation in the Cities' Readiness Initiative. A Muscotah, KS resident wrote a letter to the editor of The Topeka Capital-Journal praising NALC President Fredric Rolando's March 2 letter.
Making Postal Service pre-fund retirement puts agency at risk. NALC President Fredric Rolando wrote a guest column for the Orlando Sentinel that was published March 16. A letter to the editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, written by Ohio State Association of Letter Carriers President John Dyce, was published on Sunday, March 18.
What should be done to save the Postal Service? South Dakota State Association of Letter Carriers President Brent Fjerestad wrote an op-ed piece for the Argus Leader March 15. In a blog post, author and radio commentator Jim Hightower quoted Rolando. Salon.com journalist Josh Eidelson described how politics is more of a threat to the Postal Service than e-mail or economics.
What Should Be Done to Save the Postal Service? NALC President Fredric Rolando's letter to the editor of The New York Times was published March 8. A separate letter to The Philadelphia Inquirer ran March 6. Rolando was featured in a two-part Radio America series in February. Saginaw, MI Branch 74 President Brad McKenna's guest column for the Midland Daily News was published March 6. And an essay by Buffalo State College Professor Michael Niman has gone "viral."

Delivering solutions. NALC President Fredric Rolando's letter to the editor of The Topeka Capital-Journal appeared in the Mar. 3 print edition. In the same day's Politico, Sen. Bernie Sanders uses an op-ed to explain to readers that pre-funding is the real culprit behind the Postal Service's reported losses. And Phoenix Br. 576's Keith O'Brien was featured in a story aired on the city's Fox affiliate.

Easier to battle rain, snow. A generally supportive editorial in the Feb. 29 Philadelphia Inquirer notes that "it remains in the national interest to provide reliable and comprehensive mail delivery across the country."

NPR's 'To The Point.' California State Association President John Beaumont took part in a panel discussion about the Postal Service on Feb. 27's "To The Point," a public radio program broadcast daily on National Public Radio.

Local mail centers saved, but some fear future cuts. Waterloo, IA's KWWL captured key aspects of the Postal Service's financial situation in a Feb. 23 report that featured Region 5 RAA Mike Birkett.

The shrinking service: Why are post offices closing? A two-part look at the Postal Service's financial problems by a TV station in Watertown, NY on Feb. 22 and 23 does a more thorough and factual job of analyzing the situation than any of the major networks have done (so far).
Congressional mandate behind Postal Service woes. A letter from NALC President Fredric Rolando to the editor of USA Today was published in the paper's Friday, Feb. 17 edition.
Fix the Postal Service. President Rolando explained to readers of the Feb. 7 St. Louis Post-Dispatch what's wrong with a deeply flawed Senate bill designed to "save" the USPS. And The Nation's John Nichols finds one thing wrong with the diagnosis that the Postal Service is broke: "It's wrong."

Cutting services won’t save our vital U.S. Postal Service. Seattle Branch 79 President Jo Ann Pyle spells out the problems with the Postal Service's cost-cutting plans on the Washington State AFL-CIO's news website, and retired Auburn, ME Branch 345 member Bert Godin's letter to the editor was published in the Lewiston, ME Sun Journal.

Darrell Issa's district—provided a compelling argument about why the congressman's efforts would serve to destroy the USPS. Also, a story in that Sunday's Springfield News-Leader played up some opposition to ending six-day delivery.

Issa misleads on Postal Service. NALC President Rolando contributed an op-ed to The Orange County Register, one of California's largest newspapers and one of the top regional papers in the country, on Thursday, Dec. 29. It rebuts Rep. Darrell Issa's recent commentary piece on the Postal Service and takes on his legislative activities.

Return to sender. A letter by Mass. N.E. Mgd. Br. 25 Pres. Dave Barbuzzi to the editor of the Boston Herald was published Dec. 21. Barbuzzi was writing in response to a Dec. 10 Herald op-ed.
Postal Service saddled with funding mandates. NALC President Fredric Rolando wrote a letter to the editor of the Norfolk, VA Virginian-Pilot, praising that paper's recent, knowledgeable editorial about the Postal Service's financial problems.

The Future of America’s Post Offices. The Dec. 15 New York Times leads its "letters to the editor" section with "The Future of America's Post Offices," consisting of five letters, four of which are highly favorable to our agenda.
Crippled by a Mandate. President Rolando wrote an op-ed piece for The New York Times that ran Dec. 7. "If Congress will fix the mess it created, then the postal community can take a deep breath, roll its sleeves up and do what it always has done: modernize, adapt and better serve America," he wrote.
The Real Reason the Post Office is Going Broke. President Rolando was a guest Dec. 14 on Los Angeles-area radio station KFPK's program "Background Briefing with Ian Masters."
Postal Service delays closings until May 15. As many groups cheered the Postal Service's announcement Dec. 13 of a moratorium on facilities closures, a CNN Money story quoted President Rolando on the matter.
Better postal fix needed. A great editorial that ran in the Dec. 13 in the Buffalo News quoted Buffalo-Western New York Branch 3 President Robert McLennan.
Return to Sender. President Rolando's rebuttal to an article in the Economist ran Dec. 11. Not only was it displayed prominently, it kicked off quite a discussion—including lots of support for the USPS.
Address the pre-funding fiasco. An op-ed piece by President Rolando's ran in Dec. 9's Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a major regional newspaper read by every member of the Georgia congressional delegation and by business and civic leaders in Atlanta and other southern states.

Union will push to save mail delivery on Saturdays. On Nov. 21, NALC President Fredric V. Rolando expressed his disappointment in the Washington Times that the White House has not opposed the Postal Service’s plan to eliminate Saturday mail delivery service.

Senators Look To Slash Benefits For Disabled Civil Servants. Nov. 10, 2011 -- Ron Watson, the NALC's workers' comp expert, told the Huffington Post that planned compensation reductions are "intentionally targeted at injured workers with families, their widows and widowers, and the elderly."

Fixing the U.S. Postal Service's finances. On Oct. 28, CNBC posted a terrific interview with NALC President Fredric Rolando that details the real financial situation at the Postal Service, the options to fix it, the value of the universal network, the opportunities for growth, the role of Congress and more.
Twisted government accounting behind Postal Service woes. On Oct. 7, MSNBC posted a piece about postal finances, and Oct. 10, Mass. North Shore Br. 33 President Dana Salo's letter to the editor was published in the Gloucester Times.
Congress is killing the U.S. Postal Service. On Oct. 19, a Colorado TV station told its viewers that Congress was chiefly responsible for the Postal Service's current financial crisis, while on Oct. 20, an editorial that supports the Postal Service was printed in the Pocono Record.
Passage of HR 1351 would help the postal service. Randy Hartman of Branch 78 sent a letter to the editor of the Marion Star explaining a way to help the Postal Service's finances without resorting to service cuts. The letter was published on Sunday, Oct. 9. You can read the full letter here.
Postal Service Faces Cuts in the Face of Manufactured Fiscal Crisis. NALC President Fredric V. Rolando was a morning drive-time guest Oct. 5 at 8:40 a.m. (Pacific Time) on Los Angeles radio station KPFK.
Saving America's Postal Service. In the wake of the Sept. 27 rallies, a number of prominent columnists covered the USPS's financial problems, including in The Nation, the New York Daily News and The Huffington Post.
Postal Service workers rally against ‘manufactured' crisis. NALC President Fredric V. Rolando was quoted extensively in a terrific analysis of the Postal Service's financial situation Sept. 27 in the Huffington Post. The same day, he also was a featured guest on NPR's "Diane Rehm Show," and he spoke the weekend before with a TV station in Buffalo about the Postal Service's financial problems and the common-sense legislative solutions to those problems.

Congress got us into this mess. President Rolando was featured in a Sept. 24 story by The Buffalo News. Kansas State President Rod Holub and Salina Br. 486 President Brad Johnson were quoted in a story in the Sept. 24 Salina Journal.

On air in DC, Cleveland. President Rolando again appeared on TV Thursday evening in the DC area live on NewsChannel 8's "Capital Insider." Also, America's Work Force Radio aired its interview with our president Friday at 4 p.m. ET.
In a story published online Sept. 21, President Rolando recently was interviewed by "Federal Times Newsmaker" about strategies to solve the Postal Service's financial problems.
Region 5 RAA Mark Sims recently explained to Cedar Rapids, IA television viewers that the 2006 congressional mandate to pre-fund 75 years' worth of future retiree health benefits is the real reason behind the Postal Service's financial problems.
4 Iowa mail centers threatened. For a Sept. 16 story, President Fredric Rolando spoke with a Des Moines Register reporter about the unfair pre-funding burden and the pension over-payments. The same day, he also spoke via with Los Angeles' KTYM Radio and dispelled the incorrect notion that the Postal Service is going broke.

The Postal Service's money crisis: What the agency wants from Congress. NALC President Rolando was interviewed on Sept. 7 on News Channel 8's "Capital Insider" program, which has a large audience in Washington, Maryland and Virginia among federal employees, contractors and others involved with the federal government.

Editorial offered wrong solution. Wisconsin State Association of Letter Carriers President Scott Van Derven wrote a letter to the editor of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. It was published Aug. 7. On Aug. 30, a retired postmaster in Oklahoma wrote an insightful opinion piece for the Norman Transcript.
Post Office is unfairly painted as inefficient and draining. Letters to editors written by letter carrier activists in New York and Florida have recently been published in local newspapers.
